Staff Picks: Our Favorite Places to Observe

Laura
Locally, anywhere on the Nature Reserve. A little further a-field, Fonts Point in Anza Borrego which overlooks the Borrego Badlands. A great spot for watching the sun set.

My favorite place to observe nature outside of The Nature Reserve is Sue-Meg State Park. My favorite time is just at sunset when the light of the sun setting on the ocean below lights up the surrounding trees in a red glow.

My favorite place to observe nature is around trees. It can be a tree along a hiking trail, or even as simple as the tree in my backyard. In the morning, you can hear birds singing and bouncing around the branches. I’ve seen squirrels running up the trunk to look for food and get a good viewpoint.  You can see nests, insects, and fungi. So many different species depend on trees.  We can learn so much from observing them.

I love to sit and watch waves at the beach crashing onto the shore. I observe the patterns and sets of rolling water hills and how the blue and white bubbles foam at the edges of the waves. I watch to see how each wave affects the next. The endless cycle of waves crashing and water retreating back to the open ocean is something I could watch for hours.

I think that the Sonoran Desert (especially in the morning) is where I find it easiest to be mindful of how the plants and animals interact. The quality of light changing as the sun rises and produces the "Golden Hour" on the landscape is my favorite, as well as how a distant thunderstorm moves in across the land. It's a place where you learn to notice the activities of the animals in a context where many don't expect to find anything.

In the early morning, I take my dog out. It is so peaceful to watch the orange sun making its way over the horizon while walking in the canyon.

Ann
I love to sit in the sand at the beach to observe nature. Listening to the waves break, watching the pelicans fly by in formation and hoping to spot some dolphins playfully swimming by is the best!

Tom
My favorite place to stop and mindfully observe nature is at the top of a high mountain peak or hill because it offers amazing 360-degree views and complete silence.
